Wedding Called Off Over Whole Goat Dispute in Brahmanbaria

A wedding in Brahmanbaria was abruptly cancelled following a heated dispute over traditional wedding catering arrangements, culminating in the bride’s father calling off the ceremony before the marital vows could be solemnised.

The incident unfolded on Monday in Tolatala village, located within the Dharkhar Union of Akhaura Upazila. The prospective groom, Junaid Miah, an expatriate living in Japan, had arrived at the bride’s family residence accompanied by roughly 150 guests. The union had been arranged between Junaid, son of Abdul Jalil from Niamatpur village in Kasba, and Rasheda Akter, daughter of Shafiqul Islam Bhuiyan from Tolatala village.

Festivities initially commenced according to local customs. Upon arrival, the groom was greeted with a floral bouquet. However, friction arose almost immediately when Junaid reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the floral welcome.

Tensions escalated significantly after the communal meal. Following custom, special platters of food were presented for the groom, his brother, and his uncle. Junaid took immediate exception to the absence of a whole roasted goat on his platter—a traditional symbol of hospitality and prestige in many rural Bangladeshi wedding feasts. A verbal altercation quickly ensued between the groom and the bride’s relatives.

Shafiqul Islam, the bride’s father, explained that the groom raised strong objections regarding the menu. According to Shafiqul, no prior demand for a whole goat had been communicated to the family, and he had even assured the groom that a special feast featuring a whole goat would be arranged during the subsequent post-wedding reception. Although Junaid’s brother attempted to defuse the situation and reportedly suggested that Junaid proceed with the marriage anyway, the damage was done. Dismayed by the behaviour, the father resolved not to marry his daughter to Junaid, subsequently returning all gifts and gold ornaments before sending the entire groom’s party away.

Local representative Ashik Miah, a member of the Dharkhar Union Parishad, confirmed that he was briefed on the altercation. He noted that the groom’s unacceptable conduct regarding the meal prompted the bride’s family to annul the union and dismiss the visiting party.

The episode has since sparked widespread debate and commentary across social media platforms, with the groom himself taking to Facebook to offer a contrasting account. In his social media post, Junaid alleged that the disagreement stemmed from a demand for a much higher dower or mahr amount rather than the food itself, claiming that the bride’s family demanded ten times the previously agreed sum after the meal concluded.
