Woman Killed in Hit-and-Run on Satkhira–Jessore Highway

A 50-year-old woman was killed after being struck by a speeding bus while crossing the Satkhira–Jessore Highway in Satkhira Sadar upazila early on Thursday (5 November). The bus reportedly fled the scene following the collision, leaving the woman critically injured.

The victim, identified as Nahimon Bibi, was the wife of Inchhan Ali and a resident of Bashghata village in Satkhira Sadar upazila. The accident occurred in the Chhaygharia area of the highway during the early morning hours.

According to eyewitnesses, Nahimon was crossing the busy highway when a passenger bus travelling from Satkhira towards Jessore struck her at speed. The impact left her seriously injured. Instead of stopping to assist her, the driver reportedly drove away, leaving her at the scene.

Local residents rushed to her aid and attempted to take her to Satkhira Sadar Hospital for emergency treatment. However, her condition was critical, and she died on the way to the hospital before medical assistance could be provided.

The incident has once again drawn attention to the risks faced by pedestrians crossing major roads, particularly highways where vehicles often travel at considerable speeds. Early morning journeys can be especially hazardous when visibility, traffic conditions and the availability of safe crossing facilities become significant factors. However, the precise circumstances surrounding Thursday’s collision will need to be established through investigation.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Satkhira Sadar Police Station, Shafiqul Islam Shafik, confirmed the woman’s death. He said police were taking steps to recover the body and send it to the morgue at Satkhira Sadar Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

The police have also initiated legal proceedings in connection with the incident. Efforts are under way to identify the bus involved in the collision and establish the circumstances in which the accident occurred.

The vehicle’s failure to stop after the collision has added to the seriousness of the incident. Identifying the bus and those responsible will be central to the investigation.

Nahimon Bibi’s death has left her family facing a sudden and devastating loss. The incident also serves as a reminder of the continuing dangers on Bangladesh’s highways, where pedestrian safety, responsible driving and prompt action following road accidents remain pressing concerns.
