The victim, identified as Khushi Begum, was attacked near Tower Goli on Road No. 7 in the Jinnahpara area under Labanchara Police Station. Police have launched an investigation to identify those responsible and establish the motive behind the killing.
Khushi was the daughter of Khokon, a resident of the area, and the wife of a man known locally as Blade Babu. She leaves behind two young children, a son and a daughter.
According to local residents, the attack occurred shortly after Khushi stepped outside her house on Thursday evening. A group of four to five assailants, who were reportedly waiting nearby, opened fire on her.
One of the bullets struck her in the head, leaving her critically injured. The attackers also allegedly assaulted her with sharp weapons before fleeing the scene on motorcycles.
Following the attack, local people rushed Khushi to Khulna Medical College Hospital for emergency treatment. However, doctors declared her dead after she arrived at the hospital.
The victim’s mother, who witnessed the incident, described how the attack unfolded directly in front of her.
According to her account, she and her daughter were standing outside their home when a young man named Miraj approached them and asked a question concerning someone named Miraj.
Moments later, the assailants opened fire, shooting Khushi in the head as her mother watched helplessly. The attackers then escaped on motorcycles.
The circumstances surrounding the young man’s approach and whether it had any connection to the shooting have not yet been established.
The killing has raised concerns among local residents, particularly because the attackers allegedly carried out the assault in a residential neighbourhood before escaping.
Police are examining the circumstances of the incident, including the identities of those involved and any possible disputes that may have preceded the attack.
Officer-in-Charge Syed Mosharraf Hossain of Labanchara Police Station confirmed that an investigation was under way.
He said police were working to determine who had carried out the killing and why the woman had been targeted.
The victim’s body has been kept at the morgue of Khulna Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Investigators initially suspect that the killing may have been linked to a dispute involving narcotics. However, police have not confirmed this as the motive, and the precise circumstances remain unclear.
The possibility of a drug-related dispute is being considered as part of the preliminary investigation, but authorities have yet to disclose evidence establishing a direct connection.
Investigators will need to determine whether the attack was planned in advance, identify the individuals involved and establish what prompted the assailants to target Khushi.
The account provided by the victim’s mother could prove significant in reconstructing the sequence of events, particularly the moments immediately before the shooting.
The post-mortem examination is also expected to provide medical findings concerning the gunshot wound and the reported injuries inflicted with sharp weapons.
No arrests had been reported in the information available at the time of writing.
For Khushi’s family, the killing has left two children without their mother. The fact that she was attacked in front of her own home, with her mother present, has made the circumstances particularly distressing.
Police say their investigation remains ongoing as they seek to establish the motive and identify those responsible for the fatal attack.
