A 32-year-old political activist affiliated with the Jubo Dal, the youth wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, has been shot dead by unidentified gunmen at a brickyard in Rupsha, Khulna. The victim, identified as Fakhrul Shaikh, was attacked at approximately 12:55 am on Wednesday at the Rupsha Bricks facility located in Sreerampur.
Fakhrul was the son of Momin Uddin from Naihati village and the younger brother of local Jubo Dal leader Farhad Hossain.
The commercial site where the murder took place was jointly operated by Farhad Hossain and his business partner, Shariful. Alongside his involvement in politics as a former student leader at Rupsha College, Fakhrul managed a fish enclosure situated in the canal behind the brickyard. On Tuesday evening, he had left his home to purchase medicine for his daughter, mentioning to his brother on the way that he would inspect the brickyard and fish enclosure before returning.
Tension had reportedly flared at the site earlier that afternoon following a heated argument between Fakhrul and the brickworks’ night security guard, Taiyab. Consequently, Taiyab failed to report for his night shift. Shortly before 1:00 am, a group of armed assailants breached the compound and fired upon Fakhrul near the office building. He sustained two gunshot wounds—one striking his neck and another penetrating his head through his lower right jaw.
Upon receiving an urgent phone call from one of Fakhrul’s friends shortly after 12:30 am, Farhad and three of his brothers rushed to the site, where they discovered Fakhrul lying motionless near the office. They immediately transported him to the Rupsha Upazila Health Complex, where attending medical officers pronounced him dead on arrival.
Police officers dispatched to the scene conducted an inquest before transferring the body to Khulna Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Confirming the details, Officer-in-Charge of Rupsha Police Station, Abdur Razzaque Mir, stated that preliminary inquest findings confirmed two bullet wounds on the victim’s body. Following a formal complaint lodged by Farhad Hossain, police registered a murder case and launched a manhunt to identify and arrest the perpetrators. No arrests have been made as the investigation continues.
