Youth Nationalist Party Leader Expelled in Noakhali Following Yaba Arrest

A local opposition youth leader in Noakhali district has been summarily expelled from his organisation after being apprehended by detective police in possession of the illicit synthetic drug known as yaba.

The expelled politician, 31-year-old Md Masud, served as the senior vice-president of the Ward No. 5 unit of the Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal under the No. 8 Mohammadpur Union in Subarnachar Upazila. The Juba Dal functions as the youth front of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

Confirmation of his expulsion came on Sunday afternoon, 8 November, through Nurul Huda, the member-secretary of the Subarnachar Upazila Juba Dal. Huda explained that the party acted swiftly on Saturday night, taking disciplinary measures less than twenty-four hours after news of the arrest broke.

The law enforcement operation took place on Friday evening when a team from the Noakhali District Detective Branch (DB) conducted a targeted raid in the Mohammadpur Union area. Acting on intelligence regarding local narcotics trafficking, officers detained Masud alongside two accomplices, identified as 35-year-old Shaheda Begum and 30-year-old Delowar Hossain. During the search, officers recovered 50 pills of yaba—a potent mixture of methamphetamine and caffeine widely smuggled across south-eastern border regions.

Official party documentation corroborated the leadership’s stance. A press release signed by Riaz Uddin Saikat, joint convener of Subarnachar Upazila Juba Dal, stated that Masud was stripped of his primary membership and removed from all organisational positions on charges of provoking social disorder, breaching internal party discipline, and participating in illicit activities. The expulsion directive was formally ratified and implemented by Subarnachar Upazila Juba Dal Convener Belal Hossain Suman and Member-Secretary Nurul Huda.

Legal proceedings were launched immediately following the raid. Detective police registered a formal case under the Narcotics Control Act against the three arrested individuals. A fourth suspect, identified as 45-year-old Md Jafar, managed to evade capture during the raid and has been named in the case docket as an absconding accused.

Addressing the police action, Abu Taher Md Arif Hossain, the Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance) for Noakhali, stated that the arrestees were produced before the judicial court under the relevant drug possession laws. Upon reviewing the charges and preliminary evidence, the magistrate ordered all three suspects to be remanded to jail pending trial.

Yaba smuggling remains a critical law enforcement concern across south-eastern coastal districts like Noakhali, where transit routes connect rural communities to primary trafficking corridors. Party representatives emphasised that the rapid expulsion highlights a zero-tolerance policy towards narcotics involvement among local office-bearers, aimed at preserving organizational integrity amidst heightened public scrutiny.
