Uttara, Dhaka – A devastating fire in a six-storey residential building in Uttara, Dhaka, has claimed six lives, authorities confirmed on Friday. The blaze erupted at approximately 7:50 a.m., according to the Fire Service and Civil Defence.
Initially, three people were reported dead at the scene. Later, while receiving treatment at Kuwait-Bangladesh Friendship Hospital, three more succumbed to injuries, taking the total death toll to six, said Shahriar Ali, Deputy Commissioner of Uttara Police.
Among the deceased were two women, one man, and one child. The identities of the remaining two victims are yet to be confirmed.
Talha Bin Jasim, Public Relations Officer of the Fire Service, told Prothom Alo that the fire broke out on the second floor of a building located on Road 18, Sector 11, Uttara. The blaze quickly engulfed household furniture and belongings, contributing to the rapid spread of the fire.
Thirteen residents affected by smoke inhalation were rushed to Kuwait-Bangladesh Friendship Hospital for treatment. Tragically, three of them later died in hospital, officials confirmed.
Md. Abdul Mannan, Deputy Assistant Director of Fire Service’s Dhaka Zone-3, said that the fire may have been triggered by an electrical short circuit. “The fire started on the second floor and quickly spread to the third floor,” he added.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control by 8:25 a.m., and the Fire Service declared the fire fully extinguished by 10:00 a.m.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident and are working to determine the precise cause. The rapid spread of the fire is thought to have been exacerbated by the presence of large quantities of combustible furniture and household items.
