Tehran Endures Night of Devastating Strikes

Residents of Tehran have described scenes of profound fear and devastation as the Iranian capital endured one of the heaviest waves of bombardment since the outbreak of the current war involving the United States and Israel. Explosions rocked multiple districts overnight, leaving civilians shaken, infrastructure damaged and thousands of families uncertain about their safety.
The strikes form part of a broader military campaign launched on 28 February 2026, widely reported as a coordinated offensive by Israel and the United States against Iranian military and strategic targets. The operation—often referred to as Operation Lion’s Roar—has triggered the most significant direct confrontation between the parties in decades and has rapidly expanded into a regional crisis.

Civilians Awakened by Explosions
Residents across Tehran reported a relentless series of blasts through the night. Many described windows shaking violently as shockwaves rippled through residential neighbourhoods. One resident said that during the heaviest bombardment, “our hearts were shaking”, capturing the widespread panic felt by families sheltering inside their homes.
Air raid sirens, emergency vehicle sirens and the thunder of jets created an atmosphere reminiscent of wartime conditions not experienced in the city for decades. In some areas, residents resorted to taping their windows to reduce the risk of shattered glass from nearby explosions. Others gathered in hallways or basements while monitoring developments on television or social media.
The bombardment targeted sites that Western officials describe as military or industrial facilities linked to Iran’s weapons programmes. However, the strikes have also had serious consequences for civilians living nearby. Oil depots and industrial complexes around Tehran were reportedly hit, sending thick plumes of black smoke over the city and raising concerns about toxic air pollution and possible environmental damage.

Mounting Civilian Toll
Human rights groups and Iranian officials say the war has already taken a heavy human toll. Civilian casualties have continued to rise as the bombing campaign intensifies and retaliatory attacks spread across the region.

Life Disrupted in the Capital
Daily life in Tehran has been profoundly disrupted. Cultural events have been cancelled, and authorities have imposed temporary internet restrictions in the aftermath of the attacks. Some residents have begun leaving the city, seeking refuge in smaller towns and rural areas where they hope the risk of air strikes may be lower.
Despite the danger, many families remain in the capital because they have elderly relatives to care for or lack the means to relocate. Those staying behind describe nights spent anxiously listening for the sound of aircraft overhead, uncertain whether the next explosion will strike nearby.
A Conflict with Regional Consequences
The bombardment of Tehran marks a significant escalation in a conflict that has already spilled beyond Iran’s borders. Iranian retaliatory strikes have targeted several regional locations, including Israel and Gulf states, raising fears that the confrontation could develop into a broader Middle Eastern war.

For many residents of Tehran, however, geopolitical calculations matter little compared with the immediate reality of survival. As one local resident explained, the city is living through nights filled with fear and uncertainty, hoping that the violence will soon end and that ordinary life can eventually return.
