Estonia Announces UN Security Council Meeting Over Russian Airspace Incursion

Estonia has announced that the UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting in response to the violation of its airspace by Russian fighter jets, an incursion condemned by US President Donald Trump.

The incident occurred on Friday, when three Russian MiG-31 fighters entered Estonian airspace over the Gulf of Finland. NATO forces intercepted the jets, prompting warnings from the transatlantic alliance and the European Union, while Moscow denied any wrongdoing.

A statement from the Estonian Foreign Ministry said:”The Security Council will convene an emergency session on Monday in response to Russia’s brazen violation of Estonian airspace.”

The incursion follows reports earlier this month of Russian drones repeatedly violating Polish airspace during an attack on Ukraine, which Warsaw condemned as “an act of aggression”.

In Estonia, NATO scrambled aircraft to intercept the Russian jets, including:

  • Italian F-35 fighters attached to NATO’s Baltic air defence support mission
  • Swedish aircraft
  • Finnish aircraft

These aircraft warned the Russian jets to leave Estonian airspace.

President Donald Trump joined the condemnation of the latest violation and vowed to defend Poland and the Baltic states if Russia escalates hostilities.

When asked whether he would assist EU members in case of further Russian aggression, Trump told reporters: “Yeah, I would. I would.”

Trump’s previously friendly relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin have reportedly strained, as Putin continues his invasion of Ukraine despite the US leader’s calls for peace.

Trump commented on Thursday, at the end of a state visit to Britain: “Putin has really let me down” by continuing the war, now entering its fourth year.

Western powers have warned Russia against repeated incursions into NATO airspace, citing the alliance’s mutual defence pact.

Trump acknowledged being briefed on the Estonian incident, stating: “We don’t like it.”

This marked a firmer stance compared with his earlier reaction to the Polish airspace incursion, which he suggested “could have been a mistake.”

Monday’s UN meeting is notable as it marks the first emergency Security Council request by Estonia in its 34-year UN membership. Estonia is a European Union and NATO member and a staunch supporter of Ukraine.

Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna described the incident as: “Part of a broader pattern of escalation by Russia, both regionally and globally. This behaviour requires an international response.”
