European nations seeking to reimpose stringent sanctions on Iran over its nuclear programme met with Tehran’s top diplomat on Tuesday, yet no breakthrough was achieved.
While there was an agreement to continue consultations, the prospect of a diplomatic resolution before the sanctions take effect remains uncertain, as Iran’s supreme leader resists European pressure.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said before the meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York:
“Iran must never obtain a nuclear weapon. The chances of reaching a diplomatic solution before the sanctions go into effect are slim.”
French President Emmanuel Macron announced he would meet Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Wednesday to pursue a deal, but cautioned: “Either Iran makes a gesture and goes back to the path of peace and accountability… or sanctions will have to be imposed.”
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, reiterated Tehran’s defiance: “We did not surrender and we will not. We did not and will not yield to pressure in this matter or any other matter.”
The Iranian foreign ministry stated that it had been agreed consultations with all parties would continue, and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has until Saturday to reach a deal with his British, French, German, and EU counterparts to avoid the reinstatement of UN sanctions. These sanctions were previously suspended under the 2015 nuclear deal.
| Role/Person | Country/Organisation | Statement/Action |
| Abbas Araghchi | Iran | Met European counterparts and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas in New York |
| Johann Wadephul | Germany | Stressed Iran must not obtain nuclear weapons, slim chance of timely deal |
| Emmanuel Macron | France | To meet Iranian President; warned sanctions inevitable without gesture |
| Ayatollah Ali Khamenei | Iran | Declared Iran will not yield to pressure on uranium enrichment |
| Rafael Grossi | IAEA | Reported US exploring communication with Iran |
| Steve Witkoff | US Envoy | Engaging in diplomatic contacts, details unspecified |
The Iranian and European sides continue to blame each other for stalled negotiations. European nations and the United States suspect Iran of seeking a nuclear weapon, while Tehran insists its nuclear programme is civilian and legal.
Despite US willingness to hold talks, Khamenei dismissed negotiations with Washington as a “complete dead end.”
The European side has outlined three conditions to extend sanction relief and allow more time for negotiations:
Europeans maintain that none of these conditions have been met, while Tehran claims to have presented a balanced proposal, the details of which remain undisclosed.
