Swedish Prime Minister Suggests Russia Likely Behind Airport Drone Incursions

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson on Monday stated that Russia is the most probable actor behind the recent series of drone flights over Scandinavian airports, which occurred just days before a crucial EU summit in Copenhagen.

The sightings, reported since 22 September, have led to several temporary airport closures in Norway and Denmark, raising concerns over aviation safety and regional security.

In an interview with broadcaster TV4, Kristersson said:“The likelihood of this being about Russia wanting to send a message to countries supporting Ukraine is quite high. But nobody really, really knows.”

He added that Sweden had confirmation that drones entering Polish airspace earlier in September were Russian, stressing that while most countries are cautious about attributing responsibility without absolute certainty, “in Poland, we know that’s what it was.”

The situation escalated further over the weekend when drones were observed over Danish military installations for two consecutive nights. In response, Denmark announced strict measures to secure its airspace.

Date Location Incident
22 Sept onwards Norway & Denmark Multiple drone sightings, airport closures reported
Early Sept Poland Confirmed Russian drones entered Polish airspace
28 Sept (Sat) Denmark Drones spotted over military sites (second night)

To avoid confusion between hostile and legitimate civilian drones, Denmark banned all civilian drone flights until Friday, coinciding with the summit. Violations may result in fines or imprisonment of up to two years.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen underscored the gravity of the threat, declaring: “There is one main country that poses a threat to Europe’s security, and it is Russia.”

Moscow has “firmly rejected” any suggestion of involvement in the drone incursions.

The wave of drone sightings follows a series of alarming events in Eastern Europe, including:

  • Drone incursions into Polish and Romanian airspace
  • The violation of Estonian airspace by Russian fighter jets

These incidents have intensified NATO’s concerns. The alliance confirmed it has “enhanced vigilance” in the Baltic region, citing the risks posed by Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.

With the EU summit set for Wednesday and Thursday in Copenhagen, heightened security measures remain in force, as European leaders brace for discussions overshadowed by Russia’s activities and regional instability.
