Skipper Sacked: Shakib Al Hasan Barred from Bangladesh Team Amid Controversy

Since 5 August last year, following the political transition in Bangladesh, the chapter of Shakib Al Hasan in the national cricket team has remained largely unresolved. Recent developments suggest that the star all-rounder’s international career for Bangladesh may have come to a definitive end. The youth and sports ministry’s advisor, Asif Mahmud, has explicitly stated that Shakib will no longer represent Bangladesh.

Shakib has been out of the national squad for a prolonged period, unable to play even domestically. During this time, he has faced multiple legal cases, adding to the complications surrounding his cricketing future.

The controversy resurfaced last Sunday, triggered by a social media post by Shakib, which spread rapidly across platforms. This prompted a two-day verbal exchange with Asif Mahmud, highlighting tensions between the sports administration and the player.

Speaking to a private television channel, Asif Mahmud clarified his stance: “Allowing him to carry the Bangladeshi flag or wear the national jersey is absolutely out of the question. Previously, I did not formally instruct the board, but now my direction is clear: Shakib Al Hasan will never play for Bangladesh again.”

Mahmud further explained the reasoning behind this decisive action: “Whenever he sought to return or play, he claimed, ‘I was forced into nomination. I am not involved in politics. I only contested the MP election to serve my constituency.’ But the truth is that he is closely tied to Awami League politics, evidence of which has now emerged.”

The controversy began after Shakib posted birthday wishes for former prime minister Sheikh Hasina last Sunday. On the same day, Asif Mahmud commented on Facebook: “After not being rehabilitated, you all showered me with abuses. But I was right. End of discussion.”

Shakib responded: “Finally, someone admitted that I will no longer be given the Bangladesh jersey; I cannot play for Bangladesh anymore!”

Mahmud replied again on Facebook the following day at 5 PM: “Brother, I was forced into nomination. I only contested the election; I have not been involved in Awami League politics. You know who I mean. Anyone whose hands are stained with student and public blood should not be allowed to carry the Bangladesh flag. Board officials repeatedly asked for clarification on political affiliations, but instead of providing it, why should someone be rehabilitated just because they are a good cricketer while being involved in murder endorsement, share market scandals, money laundering, and financial fraud? The law is equal for all—face it.”
