India Rout West Indies as Jadeja Steals the Show with a Stellar All-Round Performance

West Indies continue to struggle to break free from a cycle of poor form. Recently, they have missed participation in several ICC events and have suffered consecutive defeats in bilateral series. Before their tour of India, the Caribbean team lost a T20 series to Nepal. Now, in the first Test against India, they succumbed to an innings defeat in just two and a half days.

At the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, West Indies batted first but were bowled out for 162 runs in their opening innings. India responded emphatically, posting 448 runs for 5 wickets, led by three centurions. This gave India a massive lead of 286 runs. The visitors could not recover in their second innings, being dismissed for 146 runs, handing India an innings victory by 140 runs.

Historically, this marks the 17th instance of a West Indies vs India Test ending in an innings result. West Indies had previously dominated with nine innings victories over India, but those days are behind them. In the 21st century, India has inflicted eight innings defeats on the Caribbean side. In addition, West Indies have crossed 200 runs only twice in their last 15 innings, failing to reach that mark even in this match.

India’s all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja emerged as the star of the match. Batting once, Jadeja scored an unbeaten 104 runs off 176 balls, including 6 fours and 5 sixes, one of India’s three centurions in the innings. Though wicketless in the first innings, he picked up 4 wickets in the second innings, earning his 11th Test ‘Man of the Match’ award, 10 of which came at home—a record among Indian cricketers.

Jadeja’s feat still trails Sachin Tendulkar, who played 200 Tests and earned 14 ‘Man of the Match’ awards. Jadeja and Rahul Dravid are tied with 11 awards each. At home, Sachin earned 8 ‘Man of the Match’ awards, while Jadeja has achieved 10 in 50 home Tests.

In West Indies’ second innings, young opener Alick Athanaze top-scored with just 38 runs. Other contributions included Justin Greaves (25) and Jayden Seales (22). The rest of the batting lineup failed to make a mark, and the visitors were bowled out for 146 runs before the completion of the second day and a half of play.

India’s bowling performance was led by Jadeja’s 4 wickets, supported by Mohammed Siraj (3 wickets across both innings) and Kuldeep Yadav (2 wickets), sealing a comprehensive victory for the hosts.

Score Summary:

Team Innings Score
West Indies 1st 162 all out
India 1st 448/5 declared
West Indies 2nd 146 all out

Result: India won by an innings and 140 runs
