A Croatian mountaineer has died, and two others remain missing after being swept away by an avalanche in northwestern Slovenia, authorities confirmed on Sunday.
Police spokesman Bostjan Repinc told AFP: “Rescue teams recovered a body… but the search operation had to be suspended due to severe weather conditions and the ongoing threat of further avalanches. The search will resume on Monday.”
The three mountaineers were part of a Croatian group of seven who were staying in a hut near Tosc Mountain. Despite the deteriorating weather conditions, they decided to begin their descent on Sunday morning.
A large-scale rescue operation involving over 60 personnel was launched immediately after the avalanche. However, police reported that rain, snow, and strong winds initially prevented the use of helicopters. The first body was only recovered later in the afternoon once conditions allowed aerial support.
