London’s Metropolitan Police announced on Monday that 46 people had been arrested in a major operation targeting a global network suspected of smuggling nearly 40,000 stolen mobile phones from the UK to China.
Authorities described the crackdown as the largest ever on phone theft in the British capital, where tourist areas are particularly vulnerable to snatch-and-run robberies.

Statement from Authorities
London Mayor Sadiq Khan commented:
“This is, without doubt, the largest operation of its kind in UK history. The police have targeted smuggling gang leaders as well as street robbers and snatchers.”
The Metropolitan Police reported that over 80,000 mobile phones were stolen in London in 2024, highlighting the scale of the theft problem in the city.
This operation is part of ongoing efforts to dismantle organised criminal networks and protect both residents and visitors from mobile phone theft, particularly in areas popular with tourists.
