Adani Power Threatens to Cut Electricity Supply from November 11

India’s Adani Power Limited has warned that it will stop supplying electricity to Bangladesh from November 11 if the outstanding dues are not cleared by November 10. The company’s Vice Chairman, Avinash Anurag, conveyed this in a letter sent to the Chairman of BPDB on October 31.

The letter stated that BPDB has yet to pay $496 million, including $262 million in recognized unpaid bills. If the dues are not settled by November 10, the company will be compelled to halt electricity supply from November 11.

Adani Power said that despite continuous communication and multiple letters, BPDB has failed to settle the outstanding payments. Under clauses 13.2(i)(i) and (ii) of the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) signed on November 5, 2017, the company has the right to stop supply. Even if supply is halted, the company retains the right to receive capacity payments based on ‘dependable capacity’ as per the agreement.

Earlier, Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani sent a letter to Bangladesh’s chief adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus on September 27, urging the payment of $464 million in arrears. He noted that although Bangladesh made partial payments from June to September, a large amount remains unpaid.

Gautam Adani stated that in a meeting on June 23, 2025, BPDB officials had promised to settle all dues and late payment surcharges by September, but no specific timeline has been provided. He urged immediate settlement of the dues to avoid extra pressure on operations and financing processes.

Reliable sources from the power division said BPDB is currently working under the direction of the government-formed National Review Committee on Power Purchase Agreements (PPA). The committee’s Chief Justice Moinul Islam released a preliminary report titled ‘Basic Governance Failure and Review of Anomalies in the Approval Process on Adani’ on November 2. The final report is scheduled for release in January. The committee is also monitoring the operations of Adani Power’s electricity plant.
