Guardiola Celebrates 1,000th Match as Manchester City Thrash Liverpool 3–0

Pep Guardiola reached a major milestone as a coach, overseeing his 1,000th match, and he marked the occasion in style as Manchester City defeated Liverpool 3–0 at the Etihad Stadium. Erling Haaland, Nico González, and Jeremy Doku were on target to secure a memorable victory for City.

Haaland came close to extending the lead in the first half but missed a penalty, while Liverpool could have changed the course of the game had one of their goals stood. At the 38th minute, Virgil van Dijk had seemingly equalised with a brilliant header, only for it to be ruled out for offside, as Andy Robertson was deemed to be obstructing City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. The decision sparked debate over whether Robertson actually blocked Donnarumma’s path.

Despite the disallowed goal, City dominated throughout the match. From the outset, they kept Liverpool’s defence under constant pressure. Their first significant opportunity came in the 12th minute when Jeremy Doku capitalised on a defensive error to enter the penalty area. Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili managed to block the shot, although VAR confirmed the penalty decision.

Fourteen minutes later, Mamardashvili again denied Doku, keeping Liverpool in the game for a while. However, City finally broke the deadlock in the 29th minute as Haaland met a Mateus Nunes cross to head home, marking his 14th goal of the season.

During added time in the first half, City doubled their advantage. Nico González received the ball outside the box from Bernardo Silva’s corner and struck a shot that deflected slightly off Van Dijk to find the net, making it 2–0.

City maintained their pressure in the second half and were rewarded in the 63rd minute with a superb third goal from Doku. The winger ran along the edge of the penalty area before firing a precise right-footed strike into the net.

Liverpool attempted to fight back after conceding three goals, but their forwards were unable to capitalise, and Donnarumma made several key saves. The result sees Liverpool drop to eighth in the table with 18 points from 11 matches, having lost five of those games.

City, meanwhile, secured their seventh win from 11 games, moving to second place with 22 points, just four behind leaders Arsenal.

Following the international break, City will face Newcastle on 22 November, while Liverpool travel to Nottingham Forest on the same day.
