Following a powerful blast in India’s capital, New Delhi, authorities have issued heightened security alerts in the country’s commercial hub, Mumbai, as well as in Uttar Pradesh, Jaipur, and Uttarakhand, according to NDTV.
The explosion occurred on Monday, 9 November, at 6:55 pm local time near a metro station entrance in the heavily crowded area of Red Fort in Delhi. Footage and photographs from the scene show the car involved was blown apart, with its doors ripped off.
The Red Fort, a historic monument dating back to the Mughal era, attracts thousands of tourists daily. At the time of the explosion, the area was particularly crowded.
Police have reported that the blast killed 13 people and injured 24 others. All the injured are receiving treatment in hospital, with one patient reported to be in critical condition.
The explosion also caused fires in several nearby vehicles and shops. According to government sources, 20 fire trucks from the Delhi Fire Service were deployed to bring the fires under control.
Delhi police have not yet released any information on the cause of the explosion.
In response, the Uttar Pradesh police have instructed increased security in sensitive religious sites, border areas, and key districts. Patrols and search operations in these areas have been intensified from the state capital, Lucknow.
Mumbai has also been placed on high alert.
