Dhaka University Professor Ershad Halim Sent to Jail

Dhaka University Chemistry Department professor Dr. Ershad Halim has been sent to jail following allegations of sexual harassment and assault of students. The court issued the order after a hearing at the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on Friday, November 14.

Before the hearing, the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Mehedi Hasan Millon of Mirpur Model Police Station, requested that Dr. Ershad be kept in jail until the investigation was completed. The defense lawyer, Shyamal Kumar Ray, sought bail for the accused, but the court rejected the bail application and ordered his imprisonment.

The case was confirmed by the Mirpur General Registration Branch at the court.

Earlier, on Thursday night, November 13, at around 11:00 PM, police raided Dr. Ershad’s residence in Sheora Par and took him into custody. Following this, a student from the Dhaka University Chemistry Department filed a case at Mirpur Model Police Station.

The complaint alleges that Dr. Ershad had taken students to his house, where he sexually harassed and physically assaulted them.
