The highly anticipated Bengali film “The Academy of Fine Arts” was due for release on Friday, but its premiere was suddenly delayed due to unexpected opposition from the Federation. Despite the film being awarded an ‘Adult’ certificate by the Indian certification board after 54 scenes were altered, it has now become a subject of intense debate in Kolkata.
The film was made by director Joybrata Das and a group of his friends from the Joybrata Das Film Institute. The project, which began four years ago with crowd funding, faced numerous hurdles and had to restart multiple times. Filming was completed in 2021, with the production being managed by students from SRFTI (Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute) in the post-COVID era. The budget was around ₹25 lakh. However, the Federation has blocked the release because the necessary permission from them was not obtained.
Joybrata Das explained, “We made this film with students from our film school. We raised funds ourselves. We didn’t even know that we needed permission from the Federation to make a film. There are so many rules. Our team included everyone from spot boys to cinematographers, all students of the film school. Now, we’re in a lot of distress.”
It is being said that the Federation has objected to the film’s release because no member of the Guild was involved in the project. However, Federation president Swaroop Biswas has declined to comment on the matter at this time. Actor Rudranil Ghosh stated, “I don’t know exactly what the Federation’s issue is, but I’ve heard there’s some complication with the film’s release. The fact that they didn’t involve any Guild members is not new. There have been independent films in the past that have been made without Guild involvement and even won awards, like Dostaji and Gautam Ghosh’s son’s film Zilli. I think both parties should sit down and resolve this. If a fine needs to be paid, it should be looked into. After all, the filmmakers funded the film themselves. The Federation shouldn’t be this harsh.”
One of the film’s actors, Sourav Das, mentioned that he had no idea about the Federation’s rules and regulations. “I am an actor; I focus on my role. I don’t get involved in the technicalities of the film. Since the film was made by students, none of us actors took any payment. But we had no idea whether the film was made according to the rules or not. However, I believe the film should be released. If it does, many young filmmakers will gain the courage to make similar independent films.”
Distributor Pankaj Ladia stated that he would not comment at this moment and would wait for the decision made by the Federation, director, and producers. He added that if the film does not release, they will accept that decision.
Producer Sourav Sarkar, who has been involved with the film since 2023, clarified that the production company has always adhered to Federation guidelines. “However, the director, the Federation, and the producers will decide what to do, and we will follow that.”
Reports indicate that a meeting with the Federation is scheduled for Thursday, where the director and producers will discuss the issue. However, Joybrata Das remarked, “I want the film to be released, but if it doesn’t, I won’t stop making films. Even if it’s not in Bengali, I’ll make the film in another language.”
What’s in the film?
The plot of The Academy of Fine Arts revolves around a rare and valuable antique wine bottle. A group of criminals plans to steal it, leading to a thrilling chain of events involving betrayal, infidelity, and crime. The director claims the script is filled with twists and excitement, promising to keep the audience on the edge of their seats. There’s also buzz in Tollywood that the film features bold and explosive sexual scenes, which have rarely been seen in Bengali films, and the audience is eager to experience this experimental movie.
According to Joybrata Das, the film is a pulp action thriller inspired by Quentin Tarantino, but with a balanced mix of comedy – something entirely new for Bengali audiences.
The film has stirred interest in the Bengali film industry, but its release now hinges on resolving the ongoing disputes with the Federation.
