‘The Dark Side of Showbiz’ – Paayel Opens Up About Casting Couch Horror

The dark side of the glamour industry is one where it’s hard to find any rising star who hasn’t been a victim of the casting couch. This unethical practice, where sexual favours are demanded in exchange for career opportunities, is rampant not only in Bollywood but also in Tollywood. However, it’s not just the newcomers who fall prey to this, as even top actresses are not spared, as demonstrated by the well-known Bengali actress, Paayel Sarkar.

Once one of the most successful faces of Tollywood’s commercial cinema, Paayel was part of several blockbuster hits alongside actor Dev, forming one of the most popular onscreen couples. But recently, Paayel shared a horrifying personal experience from her career during a podcast interview, revealing that a film producer had directly demanded sexual favours from her.

In the upcoming episode of “Straight Up with Shree”, Paayel recounted the shocking incident when a producer made such demands. During the conversation, the host asked her directly, “Sexual favours?” To which Paayel responded without hesitation, “Yes, that’s exactly what he wanted.”

This experience, Paayel shared, came at a difficult point in her career when her previous film had flopped, and the producer began targeting her publicly. “After the failure of one film, this producer started posting degrading comments about me on social media. He even crossed out my films and made vile remarks. He had essentially become a psycho,” she recalled.

Despite the trauma, Paayel made a successful comeback. “After that phase, I made my comeback. Then came ‘Prem Amar’ and ‘Le Chakka’. I remember shooting for two films within just one year,” she said, reflecting on her resilience and determination to rise above the dark times.
