Play Stops in Shock: Earthquake Halts Mirpur Test for Dramatic Minutes!

A rare moment of chaos unfolded at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Day Three of the second Test between Bangladesh and Ireland, when a sudden earthquake forced a dramatic halt to play. The tremor, measured at 5.7 on the Richter scale, struck Dhaka and surrounding districts of the capital on Saturday morning, sending shockwaves through the stadium and causing panic among players and spectators alike.

The incident took place during the second delivery of the 56th over in Ireland’s first innings. As the ground began to tremble, Irish and Bangladeshi players instinctively abandoned their positions and sprinted towards the boundary line, unsure of the intensity or duration of the quake. The umpires quickly intervened, signalling a stoppage of play as security personnel surveyed the surroundings to ensure the structural safety of the venue.

Although the tremor lasted only a brief moment, the sense of alarm was clearly visible. Spectators in the stands were seen standing up, holding railings for balance, and exchanging anxious glances as the earth shook beneath them. Some fans reportedly rushed towards the stairways, while others remained frozen in disbelief, attempting to process what had just happened during an international cricket match.

Play was suspended for approximately three to four minutes, though to many inside the stadium it felt considerably longer due to the uncertainty. Once officials confirmed that there was no immediate threat and aftershocks appeared unlikely, the players returned to the field, and the Test resumed under slightly calmer circumstances.

The interruption added an unexpected twist to a day otherwise dominated by Ireland’s determined effort to reduce Bangladesh’s commanding first-innings total. At the time this report was compiled, Ireland were battling at 233 for 7 after 78 overs, trailing Bangladesh’s imposing 476 by 243 runs. Despite the mounting scoreboard pressure, the Irish lower order showed grit, attempting to stabilise the innings in the face of disciplined Bangladeshi bowling.

For the players, the earthquake served as a stark reminder that even sport—played with passion and precision—can be paused by the power of nature. Several cricketers later admitted that they felt the ground shaking beneath their feet, describing it as an unnerving experience unlike anything they had encountered in their professional careers.

Crowds eventually settled, and officials praised both teams for remaining calm during what could easily have escalated into a more chaotic situation. Although minor tremors are not unheard of in the region, an earthquake interrupting an ongoing international cricket match remains an extraordinary and memorable occurrence.

As the Test continues, attention will return to the cricketing contest—but the moment the earth literally shook beneath Mirpur’s iconic stadium will remain etched in the memory of everyone present.
