The interim government has sent a letter to the Election Commission (EC) asking it to prepare for a referendum. The letter instructs that the referendum be held on the same day as the national parliamentary election. This information was confirmed on Saturday (22 November) by EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed.
He stated that the government’s letter mentions that conducting the referendum is the responsibility of the EC. It also directs that the national election and the referendum be held on the same day.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A M M Nasir Uddin recently said, “We will take further decisions on the referendum once we receive formal instructions from the government.”
For context, the EC plans to announce the schedule in the first half of December and hold the vote in the first half of February.
