The International Crimes Tribunal has scheduled the hearings for the formation of charges in two cases of crimes against humanity, relating to enforced disappearances and torture during the Awami League government, for 3rd and 7th December. The cases name former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Tarek Siddique, and a total of 30 individuals as defendants.
Alongside this, the Tribunal has appointed senior lawyer Z I Khan Panna as the State Defence counsel to represent Sheikh Hasina in these proceedings, ensuring that the former Prime Minister will receive experienced legal support for her defence.
On Sunday, the dates were announced by the three-member International Crimes Tribunal-1, led by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Mazumder. The Tribunal has been responsible for investigating and adjudicating major crimes against humanity that took place in Bangladesh’s past, aiming to ensure accountability and justice for the victims of such crimes.
Earlier on Sunday morning, at 10 a.m., thirteen military officers were summoned to appear before the International Crimes Tribunal in relation to the same two cases, which concern enforced disappearances and torture in the TFI-JIC cell during the Awami League government. These cases form part of the Tribunal’s broader investigation into violations of human rights and international humanitarian law, in which 30 individuals, including the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, have been named as defendants.
The proceedings mark a significant stage in the ongoing legal processes addressing crimes against humanity in Bangladesh. By establishing clear charges and ensuring fair representation, the Tribunal seeks to uphold justice, provide accountability for past abuses, and reinforce the rule of law. The appointment of Z I Khan Panna as State Defence for Sheikh Hasina underscores the importance of robust legal advocacy in these high-profile and complex cases.
