The Chairman of Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Dr Abdul Momen, has issued a stern warning that electoral affidavits must include detailed declarations of assets held abroad, alongside domestic assets. He made the statement on Sunday, 23 November, while responding to questions from journalists during the foundation stone-laying ceremony of the Sylhet Divisional Office.
Dr Momen emphasised, “It is not sufficient to declare only domestic assets. Concealing information about foreign assets is unlawful. Furthermore, the ACC will take action against anyone possessing unearned or illegal assets.”
The chairman also highlighted certain limitations the commission faces in enforcing asset transparency. He cited an example, stating, “In 2008, records showed that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina held 5.21 acres of agricultural land. However, during investigations, it was discovered that the total land registered under her name amounted to 29 acres. Although the ACC identified this discrepancy at the time, taking appropriate legal action was not fully possible.”
Dr Momen’s remarks underline the importance of full disclosure of both domestic and foreign assets to ensure transparency and accountability in electoral processes. By mandating such disclosures, the ACC aims to maintain public trust and prevent the misuse of office for personal gain.
He further emphasised that failure to reveal foreign assets in affidavits undermines democratic processes and compromises electoral integrity. “All candidates must submit complete and accurate asset information. Concealing information, whether at home or abroad, is a violation of the law and will be dealt with accordingly,” he added.
The chairman’s statement serves as a reminder to political candidates that asset transparency, including foreign holdings, is critical for fostering public confidence and ensuring a fair and accountable election process in Bangladesh.
