BPL 2025: Controversy Lurks as Draft Nears

The Bangladesh Premier League, often described as a festival of cricket, is heading into its twelfth edition under a cloud of controversy. Scheduled to begin on 19 December in Sylhet, the tournament’s player draft on 30 November has already revealed tensions and uncertainty.

Several franchises have failed to provide the 20 million taka franchise fee and 100 million taka bank guarantee required to ensure player salaries and tournament stability. Even new entrants like Noakhali Express are grappling with financial compliance. Iftikhar Rahman, Secretary of the Governing Council, admitted that the board is “fighting a fire” as the deadline looms.

Past BPL seasons have shown a willingness to bend rules in the face of financial risk or match-fixing allegations. This year appears no different, with previously accused players permitted to participate despite recommendations from independent investigation committees. Such decisions raise questions about the league’s commitment to integrity.

The Governing Council has contingency plans to operate teams directly if owners fail to meet obligations, but uncertainty persists. Partial payments and missing guarantees highlight the ongoing mistrust between the board and franchises.

For fans and stakeholders, this combination of financial irregularities and ethical ambiguity suggests that the BPL may once again be remembered as much for off-field controversy as for cricketing spectacle.
