Bangladesh and Pakistan are set to resume direct flights next month, restoring an air link that has been suspended for several years. Initially, it is expected that three flights will operate weekly between Dhaka and Karachi, easing travel and strengthening economic and cultural ties between the two nations.
Announcing the plan at an event hosted by the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) on Wednesday, Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to Pakistan, Iqbal Hossain Khan, described the move as a “major step” in enhancing bilateral trade and connectivity.
High Commissioner Khan also highlighted measures to simplify visa procedures for citizens of both countries. On the recommendation of LCCI and Bangladesh’s honorary consulate in Lahore, applicants will now receive visas within three to four days, significantly accelerating cross-border travel.
Emphasising commercial opportunities, Khan noted that Pakistan could increase rice exports to Bangladesh, while Bangladesh could supply fresh pineapples to Pakistan. He also pointed to significant potential in the textiles and ready-made garments sector, suggesting that trade in these areas could expand rapidly.
Furthermore, regular cargo shipping between the two countries is expected to commence shortly. Although a cargo route was inaugurated last December, growing trade demands have necessitated its regularisation.
High Commissioner Khan also stressed collaboration in the education sector. The Higher Education Commission of Pakistan will soon send a delegation comprising representatives from twelve universities to Bangladesh, aiming to attract more Bangladeshi students to Pakistani institutions.
Highlighting the tourism potential, he emphasised shared cultural, historical, and social values that could strengthen bilateral ties. Two Pakistani private airlines, Jinnah and Air Sial, have recently received approval from the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh, paving the way for the resumption of these direct flights.
