A devastating fire in several high-rise residential buildings in Hong Kong’s northern Tai Po area has increased the death toll to 44. Another 45 people are undergoing treatment in critical condition, while 279 individuals remain missing. The exact cause of the fire has not yet been identified.
Meanwhile, police have arrested three people on charges of ‘murder’ in connection with the incident. Among them are two directors of a construction company and one engineering consultant.
Although the cause of the fire is still under investigation, police reported that renovation work was underway in the building and polystyrene boards had been attached to the windows. These are believed to have helped the fire spread rapidly.
Officials stated that the blaze quickly reached neighbouring buildings, partly because of bamboo scaffolding. Investigators found nets and safety materials outside the building that did not appear to be fire-resistant. Styrofoam was also recovered from the windows.
The morning after the incident, smoke was still seen rising from parts of the tower blocks. According to the fire department, flames in four of the eight buildings have been brought under control, though it may take the entire day to fully extinguish the fire.
Hundreds of residents have been evacuated and moved to emergency shelters. Emergency housing is being arranged for those requiring relocation.
The Hong Kong Fire Department has classified the fire as a Level Five alarm—the highest alert level. The last fire of this magnitude in Hong Kong occurred 17 years ago.
A police spokesperson stated that evidence suggests extreme negligence by those responsible for the construction work. Their failure allowed the fire to spread uncontrollably, resulting in significant loss of life.
