Crisis in Indian Cricket? de Villiers Questions Dressing-Room Impact Under Gambhir!

The debate over Gautam Gambhir’s coaching style has reached new levels of intensity following India’s latest series defeat. The 2–0 whitewash at the hands of South Africa has led many to scrutinise every aspect of the head coach’s methods. This defeat comes only months after India were thrashed 3–0 by New Zealand, also at home — a fact that has shaken public confidence in the team’s direction.

To fully understand the magnitude of this decline, one must remember that India once dominated Test cricket at home. Between 2013 and 2024, the team did not lose a single Test series on their own soil, a record unmatched in the modern era. That extraordinary run ended abruptly with the series loss to New Zealand, triggering widespread criticism.

Observers have pointed to India’s confused selection strategy, which they believe stems from Gambhir’s preference for utility players rather than specialist batters or bowlers. This approach, they argue, has destabilised the team’s balance.

Joining the growing list of voices commenting on the matter is AB de Villiers. The South African great, however, chose not to blame Gambhir’s coaching tactics directly. Instead, he focused on the emotional nature of the former Indian opener and how that might affect his role as a leader.

Speaking to Ravichandran Ashwin on his YouTube channel, de Villiers said, “I always saw Gambhir as an intensely emotional cricketer. If he brings that same intensity into the dressing room as a coach, it can sometimes be harmful. Emotional coaches might struggle to remain objective.”

However, de Villiers also added that it would be unfair to conclude that Gambhir behaves the same way in a coaching capacity. “We don’t know what he is like behind the scenes. He may have evolved significantly.”

He also stressed that team success is not dependent on a single style of leadership. Players respond uniquely to different coaching profiles.

“There’s no universal formula,” he said. “Some players prefer a former star as coach because they relate better to their experience. Others thrive under coaches who never played international cricket but bring years of analysis and technical understanding. It’s all about environment and chemistry.”

India’s struggles have sparked speculation that the team lacks strong leadership after the departure of figures such as Kohli, Rohit, and Ashwin. Several young players seem overwhelmed, particularly in high-pressure moments.

Even so, de Villiers believes India are far from crisis mode. “Losing at home is painful. But the squad is packed with talent. They have many combinations to explore. A few adjustments could completely change the team’s fortunes.”

The South African legend also praised Temba Bavuma, who has quietly developed into one of the most successful Test captains in recent years. His leadership style, de Villiers said, challenges traditional assumptions.

“Temba isn’t built like past South African captains. He’s soft-spoken, reserved. Yet he has shown extraordinary composure. It proves that leadership comes in many forms, not just the loud or intimidating kind.”
