More than 200 people have died in Indonesia due to continuous flooding and landslides, according to the country’s disaster management authorities. Ilham Wahab, spokesperson for the West Sumatra Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency, said on Friday night that 61 deaths have been confirmed so far, while efforts are underway to locate another 90 missing individuals.
Earlier, the death toll in the province had been reported as 23, but it was later revised. According to the agency’s figures, an additional 116 people have died in North Sumatra, and at least 35 have been reported dead in Aceh province.
Several days of heavy rain and strong winds have inundated large areas of Aceh and West Sumatra. Although rainfall decreased slightly on Friday, the overall weather situation has shown little improvement. Rescue teams are still unable to reach many affected areas, officials said.
