Foden’s Late Heroics Rescue Manchester City in Five-Goal Thriller

Manchester City’s recent wobble had raised eyebrows across the Premier League. Consecutive defeats—first to Newcastle in the league, then to Bayer Leverkusen in Europe—had cast a shadow over a side usually admired for its control and consistency. But at the Etihad, against a spirited Leeds United, City rediscovered their resolve to win 3–2 in a gripping match.

Phil Foden was the heartbeat of City’s revival. The 23-year-old midfielder opened the scoring inside the first minute, a sharp reminder of his quality and timing. The early goal energised the hosts, who looked comfortable and confident throughout the opening half. When Josko Gvardiol doubled the advantage in the 25th minute, few imagined the drama that was yet to follow.

Leeds, fighting near the relegation zone, emerged after the break with renewed conviction. Their tactical aggression, increased pressing and willingness to take risks unsettled City. Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s goal in the 49th minute shifted the momentum, and suddenly the match had a different tone. Leeds sensed vulnerability and continued to push.

City, usually adept at game management, appeared briefly rattled. Mistimed passes and defensive gaps offered Leeds encouragement. Luka Nmecha capitalised in the 68th minute, guiding home the equaliser to make it 2–2—and for a period, it was the visitors who looked capable of snatching a famous win.

But City’s hallmark under Guardiola has always been their ability to find solutions. As stoppage time arrived, Foden stepped up again. In the 91st minute, he pounced on a loose ball and finished clinically, restoring City’s lead and the home crowd’s belief. The final whistle came after more than ten minutes of added time, with City gripping their advantage tightly.

With this hard-earned victory, City climb to second in the table with 25 points from 13 matches. Arsenal remain top with 29 from 12, while Chelsea trail City by two points in third.

Leeds’ situation worsens; four consecutive defeats leave them 18th, deep in the fight for survival.
