For many Bangladeshis, the name Mahadi Faisal evokes nostalgia. His song “Tumi Boruna Hole Hob Ami Sunil” became an instant sensation, capturing hearts and firmly establishing him in the mainstream. Over time, other tracks such as “Megh Hoye Kando Bole,” “Malik Rabbana,” and “Koto Kache Tomar” further enhanced his reputation. Yet, in recent years, Mahadi appeared less frequently in the public eye. Contrary to popular belief, he was never inactive—his focus shifted from quantity to quality, ensuring that each release resonated deeply with listeners. Now, he is preparing a return with fresh music and projects exploring the rich tradition of Nazrul Sangeet.
Mahadi’s journey began at a young age. In 1995, he achieved third place in devotional singing at the national ‘Notun Kuri’ competition. The following year, he won first prize in folk music during National Education Week. Encouraged by friends and mentors, Mahadi entered the reality show ‘Close Up One’ in 2005. After progressing through multiple rounds, he reached the Top Eleven. Though he did not make the final Top Ten, the exposure brought him widespread recognition. Posters adorned his hometown, fans cheered at every concert, and Mahadi’s name became synonymous with musical promise.
His first solo album, Bondona, released in 2007, catapulted him to stardom. The track “Sunil–Boruna,” a collaboration with lyricist Asif Iqbal and composer Prince Mahmud, earned him both fame and a Citycell–Channel i Music Award. Mahadi recalls, “While cover songs gave me initial recognition on ‘Close Up One,’ it was my own music that defined me.”
In 2009, Mahadi and Elita released the duet album Ontohin, featuring hits like “Hrider Jhoro” and “Nijhum Raat.” Subsequent albums Onnorokom (2011) and Chol Ontohin (2015) continued to strengthen his fan base. Despite changes in the music industry and the decline of album culture, Mahadi embraced digital platforms, releasing singles that reached audiences nationwide. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he led a project featuring nearly 300 artists for the motivational song Eso Shobai, serving as executive producer. Recent releases include Jokhon Juddhe Achi, Keu Bozhe To Keu Bozhe Na, and this year’s Koto Kache Tomar.
Outside music, Mahadi leads a corporate life. He married Arifa Rahman in 2010, and they have one daughter, Yuwena Fatiha. The family lives in Dhaka. With a new song set for release at the end of the year and several Nazrul Sangeet projects underway, Mahadi is poised to return with the same passion and dedication that first captured the hearts of his fans.
