Clinical West Indies Attack Leaves New Zealand Reeling at Hagley Oval

Rain, cloud cover and a green pitch combined to create a textbook scenario for seam bowling on the opening day in Christchurch. West Indies captain Roston Chase did not hesitate to bowl first after winning the toss, a decision backed by long-standing local statistics—only once in 14 previous Tests at the venue had a captain opted to bat first. His judgement proved spot on as West Indies dominated a stop-start day curtailed by poor light and showers.

New Zealand closed the day on 231 for 9, a score that owed more to lower-order grit than top-order assurance. The West Indies attack maintained pressure throughout, with all six bowlers taking wickets and exploiting the lateral movement on offer.

The innings began disastrously for the hosts. Devon Conway departed for a duck after Roach struck with just the second ball of the match. A period of calm followed as Tom Latham and Kane Williamson composed a 93-run partnership, building cautiously against the disciplined Caribbean attack. Latham, however, managed only 24 from 85 balls before edging Justin Greaves to Imlach.

That wicket opened the floodgates. New Zealand slumped as four wickets tumbled for 27 runs. Williamson, as so often, stood tall amid turmoil. His 52 from 102 balls was marked by patience and technical precision, and it remained the only fifty of the innings.

Mitchell Bracewell and Nathan Smith offered resistance later in the day, putting together a vital 52-run stand for the seventh wicket. Earlier, Smith had also contributed to a 28-run partnership with Tom Blundell. Still, wickets continued to fall at crucial moments, preventing any sustained recovery. Fox and Duffy ended the innings still unbeaten on 4 each.

Roach, Shields and Greaves led the attack with two wickets each, while Seales, Chase and Layne provided support with one apiece. By stumps, West Indies held a firm grip on the match, having utilised the bowling conditions to near perfection.
