Putin pledges full operationalisation of India’s largest nuclear power plant

Russian President Vladimir Putin has reiterated a firm commitment to bring India’s largest nuclear power plant, Kundankulam, to full operational capacity. The plant, located in the state of Tamil Nadu, comprises six reactors with a total generation capacity of six thousand megawatts.

At a joint press conference with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, Putin stated, “We are implementing a milestone project at Kundankulam. Two of the six reactors are already connected to the national grid, while construction of the remaining four is underway. Once fully operational, this plant will make a substantial contribution to India’s energy requirements.”

Putin further disclosed that Russia’s state nuclear energy corporation, Rosatom, has already supplied the first batch of nuclear fuel for the third reactor. The fuel was produced at the Novosibirsk Chemical Concentrates Plant in Russia and delivered to India by cargo aircraft. According to a 2024 agreement, Russia will supply fuel for the third and fourth reactors throughout their operational lifespan in a total of seven flights.

Additionally, Putin indicated potential future collaboration between India and Russia on small modular reactors, floating nuclear power plants, and nuclear applications in medicine and agriculture.

He also affirmed that Russia remains a reliable partner for India in the continuous supply of oil, gas, coal, and other energy resources. Earlier this year, India announced its ambitious target to reach 100 gigawatts of nuclear power generation by 2070, nearly ten times the current capacity.
