England Replace Injured Veteran Wood

England have confirmed that Mark Wood will not participate in the remaining Ashes fixtures due to a recurring knee injury. The 36-year-old pacer sustained the injury during the first Test in Perth, his first match since undergoing knee surgery in February following England’s Champions Trophy campaign. Matthew Fisher, aged 28, will join the squad as Wood’s replacement.

Wood had hoped to recover in time to feature in the final two Tests in Melbourne and Sydney. However, the demands of top-level cricket and the impact of age on recovery proved too much. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) stated that Wood will return home this week for intensive rehabilitation under the supervision of the national team’s medical staff.

During the Perth Test, Wood bowled 11 overs but failed to claim a wicket as England lost by eight wickets. He did not play in the second Test in Brisbane, which England also lost, leaving the team 0-2 down in the Ashes series. Fisher, who has only played one Test for England against the West Indies in 2022, will bring new energy to England’s bowling attack. The six-foot-two pacer has already been in Australia playing for the England Lions and will now join the senior team ahead of the third Test in Adelaide on 17 December.

Earlier, Australia announced that Josh Hazlewood would miss the Ashes series entirely. Nevertheless, the hosts’ squad is bolstered by the return of Pat Cummins and potentially Usman Khawaja, who missed the Brisbane Test due to back issues. Australia currently leads the series 2-0 and will look to continue their dominance over England.

England’s loss of Wood represents a significant blow, removing experience and pace from the bowling line-up. However, Fisher’s inclusion offers hope, with the young pacer expected to inject fresh energy into England’s attack. The Adelaide Test will be a critical match, and all eyes will be on England’s bowlers to see if they can mount a competitive challenge against a formidable Australian side.
