The police are grappling with a chilling double homicide that has shaken the capital. In a flat on Shahjahan Road in Mohammadpur, mother Laila Afroze and her daughter Nafisa Lawal Binte Aziz were murdered with such extreme brutality that investigators now suspect the assailant was either a trained killer or a psychopathic individual driven by uncontrollable rage.
The murders took place on Monday, and while the full motive remains unclear, early observations from the crime scene have left seasoned officers deeply unsettled. Authorities say it is “almost impossible for an ordinary person” to commit violence of this magnitude.
The inquest report has laid bare horrific details. Investigators noted that they had not encountered such a shocking scene in recent times.
| Victim | Number of Wounds | Key Injury Locations |
|---|---|---|
| Laila Afroze (Mother) | 30 injuries | Left cheek (3), chin (4), below neck (5), left arm (3), wrists (3), left side of chest (9), left abdomen (2), lower abdomen (1) |
| Nafisa (Daughter) | 6 deep wounds | Neck, chest (both sides), and upper torso |
Medical examiners confirmed that massive blood loss caused the deaths of both victims. Their bodies were handed over to the family on Monday night after autopsy procedures were completed.
A police source confirmed that two knives were recovered from the scene. One was an ordinary kitchen knife, but the other was an unusual weapon: a ‘switch gear’ knife—designed to be gripped between the fingers in a way that prevents it from slipping during a strike.
Such a weapon is rarely found in domestic settings, leading investigators to believe that the attacker had brought it intentionally. The manner of use, police say, points to either combat-style training or a deranged psychological profile.
Investigators also discovered that after the murders, the killer calmly entered the bathroom, took a shower, washed off the blood, changed clothes and then left the flat wearing the murdered girl’s school uniform.
A murder case has been filed against the household maid, Ayesha, who is currently absconding.
Deputy Police Commissioner (Tejgaon Division) Ibne Mizan stated that the precision of the attack suggests the killer may have been trained. CCTV footage from the vicinity is being analysed, focusing on the suspect’s movements before and after the incident.
He added that the combination of a specialised weapon and the calculated escape indicates planning rather than a spontaneous act.
Police believe that arresting the fugitive maid will be key to uncovering the true motive behind the horrifying double murder.
On Tuesday, following the Zuhr prayers, Laila Afroze and Nafisa Lawal Binte Aziz were laid to rest at the Gharikhana Cemetery in Natore town. Their funeral prayer was held at the grounds of Nawab Siraj-ud-Daulah Government College, attended by relatives, neighbours, and people from all walks of life who came to pay their respects to the slain mother and daughter.
