DMP Commissioner Urges Identity Verification Before Hiring Domestic Workers

Dhaka, Bangladesh: In the wake of recent high-profile incidents involving domestic staff, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali has urged city residents to thoroughly verify the identity of domestic workers before employment. The appeal was made in an official DMP statement released on Tuesday night.

Commissioner Ali emphasised that proper verification is essential for personal and household security. He advised that prospective employers should collect and retain the following documents before hiring:

National Identity Card (NID) of the domestic worker.

One recent passport-sized photograph.

Names and addresses of at least two reliable references to confirm identity.

He further recommended that citizens accurately complete rental registration forms and provide information to the police when requested, helping authorities maintain a comprehensive record of domestic staff in Dhaka.

“Even small steps, such as verifying identity and maintaining proper documentation, can prevent potential threats and criminal activity,” said Commissioner Ali in the statement.

The announcement comes following the shocking double murder committed by a domestic worker in Mohammadpur on Monday, which has sent shockwaves through the capital. While extreme, the incident highlights the importance of careful vetting. DMP also noted that cases involving domestic workers misappropriating valuables and absconding are not uncommon.

Police Recommendations for Safe Domestic Employment

Measure Description
Identity Verification Collect NID, passport-sized photo, and personal details
References Obtain names and addresses of at least two reliable references
Documentation Complete rental registration forms accurately
Police Cooperation Provide information to police to maintain staff records
Purpose Enhance household security and prevent crime

Commissioner Ali stressed that residents can substantially reduce risks through simple precautionary measures. Proper verification and documentation of domestic staff not only protect households but also aid law enforcement in rapid investigation when incidents occur.

He urged the public to remain vigilant while hiring domestic workers, noting that the combination of due diligence, awareness, and police cooperation can significantly reduce risks of theft, violence, or other criminal activities in urban households.

The DMP hopes that raising awareness and encouraging proactive measures will restore public confidence in safely employing domestic staff across Dhaka and prevent tragedies similar to the Mohammadpur incident from recurring.
