Dhaka University Hall Renamed Amid Campus Debate

Dhaka University’s historic residential hall, formerly known as Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall, has been informally rechristened as Shaheed Osman Hadi Hall following a dramatic late-night action by a group of students. The incident, which took place on Saturday night, has sparked intense debate across the campus and beyond, reigniting long-standing discussions about memory, politics and the symbolism of naming public institutions.

According to eyewitnesses, shortly before 10 pm a group of students gathered at the main gate of the hall. Taking advantage of the cover of darkness, they used a crane to climb up and remove the existing signboard bearing the name of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. In its place, they installed a new sign reading Shaheed Osman Hadi Hall in bold letters. Throughout the operation, slogans were chanted and speeches delivered, emphasising what the organisers described as the political and symbolic significance of the renaming. Members of law enforcement agencies were present in the vicinity in a state of alert, but no major clashes or untoward incidents were reported.

The episode immediately became a focal point of discussion within the university community. Ahmed Al Sabah, General Secretary of the hall parliament, told the media that the initiative went far beyond a simple change of signage. He explained that there are plans to remove existing graffiti or portraits of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman from the hall’s walls and replace them with murals depicting the life and struggles of Shaheed Osman Hadi. “To us, Shaheed Osman Hadi represents protest, resistance and courage for the present generation,” he said. “Through this initiative, we want to honour his memory and reflect the emotions and aspirations of today’s students.”

The renaming has also triggered renewed debate over the titles of other residential halls at Dhaka University. A section of students has raised demands for changing the name of Fazilatunnesa Hall, with proposed alternatives reportedly including Felani Hall and Captain Sitara Begum Hall. In support of these demands, students have announced plans to lay siege to the Vice-Chancellor’s office on Sunday afternoon.

The programme was confirmed in a message circulated by Musaddik Ali Ibne Mohammad, Literary and Cultural Affairs Secretary of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU). The message stated that the renaming of the hall was neither an isolated nor impulsive act, but rather the expression of long-standing grievances and demands. Students, it said, are calling for a democratic, participatory and time-appropriate process for naming university halls and infrastructure—one that reflects contemporary perspectives alongside historical narratives.

As of now, the university administration has not issued any official statement on the matter. Nevertheless, many observers believe the incident has underscored the urgent need for dialogue among teachers, administrators and students. Once again, Dhaka University finds itself at the centre of a broader debate over history, politics and remembrance—highlighting just how sensitive and contested the question of how the past should be commemorated remains on campus.
