Three Die as Dengue Admissions Reach 372

Three people have died from dengue across Bangladesh in the past 24 hours, while another 372 patients have been admitted to hospitals, according to the latest figures released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Monday.

The official update covers the period from 8:00 a.m. on Sunday to 8:00 a.m. on Monday and highlights the continued pressure dengue is placing on the country’s healthcare system during the peak monsoon season, when mosquito breeding typically accelerates.

According to the DGHS, the highest number of new hospital admissions was recorded outside the city corporation areas of Dhaka Division, where 103 patients were admitted. Barishal Division reported 67 new cases, followed by Chattogram Division with 54. Dhaka South City Corporation recorded 52 admissions, while Khulna Division reported 43. Dhaka North City Corporation registered 22 new patients, Mymensingh Division reported 21, Rangpur Division six, and Rajshahi Division four.

The latest figures bring the total number of confirmed dengue cases in Bangladesh this year to 10,857. Health officials also noted that the disease has spread rapidly during July, with 4,753 people admitted to hospitals so far this month alone. The sharp rise reflects the seasonal increase in dengue transmission, as prolonged rainfall and standing water create favourable conditions for the breeding of Aedes mosquitoes, which carry the virus.

The death toll has also continued to climb. Since the beginning of the year, 37 people have died from dengue-related complications. Of those fatalities, 19 have occurred during July, making it the deadliest month of the year so far. Earlier in the year, two deaths were recorded in January, two in February, one in May and 13 in June.

Public health experts have repeatedly warned that dengue cases tend to increase during the rainy season and have urged people to eliminate stagnant water around homes, workplaces and construction sites to reduce mosquito breeding. They also advise individuals experiencing symptoms such as persistent fever, severe headache, muscle and joint pain, nausea or unusual bleeding to seek medical attention promptly, as early diagnosis and supportive treatment can significantly reduce the risk of severe complications.

Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as hospitals remain on alert for a further rise in infections during the weeks ahead.
