Three Arrested Over Digital Wallet Fraud in Bogura

Detectives in Bogura have arrested three men, including the alleged mastermind of an online fraud ring, on suspicion of embezzling money through digital wallet applications and conducting unlawful electronic financial transactions.

The arrests were made at around 4 am on Thursday (22 October) near the main entrance of IITB in the Colony area of Bogura town, following an intelligence-led operation by the District Detective Branch (DB).

The suspects have been identified as Nazim Uddin, 42, of Rahimabad Dakshinpara, and Obaidur Rahman, 40, of Phulkot Paschimpara, both in Shajahanpur upazila, and Nurul Islam, 41, of Hazradighi Uttarpara in Bogura Sadar upazila.

Police identified Nazim Uddin as the alleged ringleader of the group, which investigators believe had been involved in fraudulent online financial activities for an extended period.

Additional Superintendent of Police and district police spokesperson Atowar Rahman confirmed the arrests in an official press release.

According to Rahman, detectives conducted the operation in the Colony area, beside the Satmatha–Banani highway, after receiving confidential information about the suspects’ activities.

During the operation, officers seized four mobile phones and five SIM cards allegedly used to facilitate the fraudulent transactions.

Police said the suspects had developed a scheme designed to attract individuals interested in earning substantial returns through digital financial platforms.

Investigators believe the group initially approached potential customers with offers to create accounts through an online application. Customers were required to pay a specified amount to open these accounts.

Once the accounts had been established, the suspects allegedly encouraged customers to deposit larger sums by promising significantly higher profits.

Police said the assurances of lucrative returns were used to persuade customers to transfer considerable amounts of money, which the suspects subsequently misappropriated.

The alleged scheme relied on customers believing that increasing their deposits would generate greater financial rewards. Such promises can expose individuals to considerable financial losses, particularly when the operators and legitimacy of an investment arrangement cannot be independently verified.

Investigators examining the seized mobile phones reportedly discovered records of financial transactions involving several online platforms, including Binance, Cross Market, Platin Passport, Abrix Labs and FundFX.

Police described the transactions found on the devices as unlawful and also reported discovering multiple Gmail accounts.

However, the presence of these platforms on the seized devices does not, by itself, establish that the platforms or their operators were involved in wrongdoing. The allegations concern the suspects’ reported use of digital services to conduct unauthorised financial activities.

Officer-in-Charge of the Bogura District Detective Branch Iqbal Bahar said the three suspects had allegedly been working together for a considerable period, using electronic devices to conduct illegal online financial transactions for personal financial gain.

He said their activities involved the misuse of digital technology and online financial services to obtain money unlawfully.

A case has been filed against the three arrested men under the Cyber Protection Act at Bogura Sadar Police Station.

The incident highlights the risks associated with online investment offers that promise unusually high returns. Fraudulent schemes can exploit the convenience of digital transactions and the growing use of mobile applications to persuade customers to transfer money without adequate verification.

Financial transactions conducted through online platforms may involve multiple accounts, electronic communications and digital payment records. These can provide investigators with evidence when examining allegations of fraud and tracing suspected financial misconduct.

Authorities have not disclosed the total amount allegedly misappropriated or the number of people believed to have fallen victim to the scheme.

No specific information has been provided about how much money passed through the accounts associated with the suspects or whether additional individuals were involved.

The allegations against the three men remain subject to investigation and legal proceedings.
