Israel Plans to Arm 10,000 Reserve Soldiers at Home

The Israeli military is reportedly preparing to arm nearly 10,000 reserve soldiers, allowing them to keep firearms and combat equipment in their own homes on a permanent basis. Local media reported on Sunday that this unprecedented move stems from lessons learned during the events of 7 October 2023, when the country faced a critical security crisis.

According to Yedioth Ahronoth, the initiative is primarily focused on the “Division David” unit, numbered 96. This specialised reserve division, established almost a year ago, is primarily composed of older reservists, generally between the ages of 40 and 60, who volunteer to return to active service even after completing their formal reserve obligations.

Under the plan, these soldiers will be provided with M4 or upgraded M16 rifles, magazines, combat vests, and helmets. To ensure rapid mobilisation in the event of an emergency, the weapons and equipment will be delivered directly to their homes, stored in large, military-grade safes.

The report emphasises that the rifles will remain in soldiers’ homes throughout the year. The goal is to drastically reduce response times during any future crises. Soldiers assigned to this programme are expected to wear their military uniforms only for a few weeks annually. For the remainder of the year, they will continue living as ordinary civilians, though their weapons will remain under their personal custody.

Israeli military officials described the policy shift as a major learning outcome from the events of October 2023. Previously, due to concerns over theft or security breaches, even combat unit soldiers on leave were not permitted to keep their weapons at home. This new initiative represents a significant policy overhaul in how Israel views rapid mobilisation of reserve forces.

According to official statistics, Israel has approximately 400,000 reserve soldiers. Since the outbreak of the Gaza conflict in October 2023, 923 Israeli officers and soldiers have lost their lives. Meanwhile, Israeli military operations in Gaza have resulted in approximately 71,000 Palestinian deaths, the majority of whom were women and children, and over 171,000 injuries.

This initiative highlights Israel’s renewed focus on ensuring its reserve forces are prepared for rapid response in an increasingly volatile security environment, reflecting the government’s ongoing concern over national defence and emergency preparedness.
