In cricket, it is often said that form is temporary, but class is permanent. On Sunday at the Dubai International Stadium, Shakib Al Hasan proved this maxim once again, delivering a stunning all-round performance that secured him the Man of the Match award in the IL T20 contest.
MI Emirates, led by Shakib, defeated Desert Vipers by four wickets in a tense encounter. Batting first, the Vipers posted a total of 124 runs, setting a modest but challenging target. Shakib, arriving at the crease with his team needing stability, played a measured yet impactful innings. His 25-ball contribution of 17 runs may appear modest, but the timing of his boundaries ensured MI Emirates crossed the finish line with confidence.
Earlier, Shakib showcased his bowling prowess. He bowled four overs, conceding just 14 runs while claiming two crucial wickets. His first breakthrough came in the seventh over when Fakhar Zaman misjudged a skidding delivery and was clean bowled by Shakib, with Nicholas Pooran ensuring the stumps rattled. Moments later, Sam Curran fell victim to a clever delivery from Shakib, who deceived the batsman and secured the return catch. By the end of his two-over spell, his figures read 2-0-8-2.
Despite a brief dry spell in the previous two matches, where he bowled two overs without success, Shakib returned to form at a critical moment. His controlled and precise spin bowling restricted the opposition’s scoring opportunities, enabling MI Emirates to maintain pressure.
Shakib’s 45th Man of the Match award in T20 cricket now places him behind only a handful of legends—Chris Gayle (60), Kieron Pollard (48), and Glenn Maxwell (48). His dominance in tournament and series-level accolades is unmatched, with the experienced left-hander winning eight Player of the Series awards, surpassing even India’s Virat Kohli, who has seven.
Reflecting on his innings at the presentation ceremony, Shakib explained, “The pitch offered some assistance for spin, and batting was not straightforward. I knew our side had powerful hitters, so I adopted a cautious approach. Overall, I am very pleased with the team’s performance.”
By balancing responsibility with aggression, Shakib once again cemented his status as one of the greatest all-rounders in modern cricket, a player capable of turning matches single-handedly with both bat and ball.
