Jamaat Leader Expelled Over Allegations Of Shelter To Sex Workers

In a significant disciplinary move, the local branch of Jamaat-e-Islami in Kalapara Upazila, Patuakhali, has expelled senior leader Abdul Halim. The expulsion, announced on 22 December 2025, followed a special Rokon meeting convened by the upazila leadership to investigate allegations that Halim had provided shelter to sex workers in his residence.

Abdul Halim, a resident of Musulliyabad village in Latachapli Union, has long been active in Jamaat’s political activities in Kuakata. Previously, he was recognised as an ‘Ulama League leader’, a role considered indicative of both religious and political influence in the region.

During a press conference held at the Kuakata Press Club, Mohammad Shahidul Islam, the municipal branch Ameer of Jamaat, stated, “The special Rokon meeting was attended by senior leaders from both the upazila and municipal branches. Allegations against Abdul Halim were examined in detail, supported by documentary and testimonial evidence. Based on these findings, the organisation has taken a formal decision.”

Details of the Special Rokon Meeting

Date of Expulsion 22 December 2025

According to local sources, Halim had been leasing six family apartments in his residence under the pretext of legitimate rentals. Evidence suggests that some units were allegedly used for dubious activities. Halim had been active in Jamaat’s political work since 5 August of the previous year.

Halim himself responded, stating, “I have six family apartments for rent. Two months ago, four women, posing as mother and daughter, rented one unit. Their activities are beyond my responsibility. I was expelled without prior discussion. Had my side been heard, the decision would have been different.”

Upazila Jamaat Ameer Maulana Mohammad Abdul Kaiyum defended the organisation’s action: “Adherence to party rules and discipline is vital. This special Rokon meeting was convened based on formal complaints. The decision was made solely on verified evidence.”

The expulsion has sparked widespread debate in local political circles, highlighting Jamaat-e-Islami’s strict stance on ethical accountability and organisational discipline. Observers note that this move reflects the party’s determination to uphold moral standards and internal order.
