Seven Injured in Shariatpur NCP-Chattro Dol Clash

A violent clash erupted on Monday evening between the National Civic Party (NCP) and the Student League in Shariatpur Sadar Upazila, leaving at least seven people injured. The confrontation involved homemade explosives and small arms, escalating tensions in the district.

The most seriously injured, Naeem (25), a Student League activist, was immediately transferred to Dhaka for specialised medical treatment. Other injured individuals include Ashik (24), Nirab (19), Arman Darzi (26), Ishaq Sardar (34), Abid Khan (28), and Mamun Majhi (30).

Name Age Affiliation Injury Severity
Naeem 25 Student League Critical
Ashik 24 Student League Moderate
Nirab 19 Student League Moderate
Arman Darzi 26 Student League Minor
Ishaq Sardar 34 Student League Moderate
Abid Khan 28 Student League Minor
Mamun Majhi 30 NCP Minor

According to the officer-in-charge of Palong Model Police Station, Shah Alam, the incident took place near Chourangi Mor while NCP leaders and activists were conducting a protest march. “A motorcycle entered the procession unexpectedly, prompting a verbal altercation between the NCP and Student League members. The situation quickly escalated into a physical confrontation, during which several homemade explosives detonated,” he stated. Police promptly arrived and brought the situation under control, though no formal complaints have been filed yet.

Local sources report that the NCP march was organised to protest the assassination of Inquilab Mancha spokesperson Osman Hadi and to condemn a shooting incident involving Motaleb Shikdar, a central committee organiser of Labour Force in Khulna. The clash reportedly began when a Student League member rode his motorcycle into the NCP procession, leading to heated exchanges.

Both parties have since exchanged accusations. Sohail Talukdar, District Student League Secretary, claimed that NCP activists initiated the attack and that allegations of vandalism against the Student League were false. In contrast, Sabuj Talukdar, former Joint Coordinator of District NCP, alleged that Student League members attacked NCP activists with small arms and explosives after one of their members had been restrained for questioning.

Eyewitnesses described the incident as unprecedented in Shariatpur, highlighting that previously both groups had participated jointly in anti-fascist movements. Former coordinator of the District Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, Aminul Mohammad Jitu, expressed concern, stating, “Such violence between youth organisations that previously collaborated for social causes is deeply alarming.”
