Chilling Winter Grips Dhaka, Fog Disrupts Travel

Dhaka, 26 December – The capital is currently enduring a sharp intensification of winter, as cold air streams in from the north and northwest. Early on Friday morning, temperatures in Dhaka plunged to a notable 13.5°C, while dense fog shrouded the city, further intensifying the chill. The frigid air, combined with heavy moisture in the atmosphere, has created particularly biting conditions for residents.

According to meteorological data, at 6:00 am today, the temperature in Dhaka stood at 14°C, accompanied by a humidity level of 95%, which amplified the sensation of cold. The previous day’s maximum temperature had been 19.5°C, reflecting a significant overnight drop.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has indicated that this heightened cold is likely to persist over the coming days. While daytime temperatures may rise slightly, the morning fog and chilly winds are expected to remain. Winds from the north and northwest are forecast to blow at speeds of 6–12 km/h, further contributing to the wintry conditions.

Weather Data Snapshot – Dhaka

Parameter Measurement
Early Morning Temperature 14°C
Humidity 95%
Lowest Temperature 13.5°C
Maximum Temperature (Yesterday) 19.5°C
Wind Speed 6–12 km/h
Sunrise (Tomorrow) 6:40 am
Sunset (Today) 5:19 pm

Elsewhere in the country, medium to dense fog is expected to prevail in several regions. The fog is likely to reduce visibility on roads, potentially causing disruptions to vehicular movement. Inland water transport may also face delays or temporary suspension due to poor visibility. The Meteorological Department has advised both commuters and drivers to exercise heightened caution during travel.

Experts explain that such low temperatures towards the end of December are a normal consequence of persistent northerly winds. However, for vulnerable populations, particularly the impoverished and floating communities, the cold can pose severe hardships. In addition, prolonged fog could threaten winter crops, raising concerns over agricultural losses if these conditions persist.

Residents are advised to take appropriate measures to stay warm, while travellers are urged to remain vigilant during journeys in fog-affected areas.
