Four-Year-Old Protects Brother After Heartless Abandonment

A deeply moving yet harrowing incident has unfolded in the Anwara Upazila of Chattogram, where two young siblings were abandoned on a roadside amidst a biting winter cold wave. On the evening of Sunday, 28 December, as temperatures plummeted, a four-year-old girl named Aisha was discovered huddling over her two-year-old brother to shield him from the freezing winds. The children, both of whom are reportedly unwell, were found shivering near the Mazar Gate area in the Barkhain Union by a local CNG-powered auto-rickshaw driver, Mohim Uddin.

Disturbed by the sight of two unattended toddlers in such treacherous weather, Mohim Uddin approached the pair. Upon realising they had been left entirely alone, he acted on humanitarian grounds and brought them to his home. His wife, Sharmin Akter, provided immediate care, bathing the children in warm water and providing much-needed sustenance. According to Sharmin, the younger boy appears to have physical disabilities, leading the couple to suspect that the children’s health struggles may have been the tragic motivation behind their parents’ decision to desert them.

The elder sibling, Aisha, was able to provide some heartbreaking clarity regarding their identity. She identified her father as Khorshed Alam and her mother as Jhinuk Akhtar, stating that their home is located in the Moulvi Bazar area of Satkania Upazila. In a confusing turn of events, the young girl claimed that an “aunt” had brought them from their parents and instructed them to wait by the roadside before disappearing into the night.

Local authorities have responded swiftly to the case. Sub-Inspector Momen of Anwara Police Station confirmed that he visited the scene and has circulated the children’s photographs and details to various police stations across the region to locate their kin. Meanwhile, the Anwara Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), Tahmina Akter, stated that the children are being processed through the Social Services Department. They will be transferred to a dedicated “Safe Home” where they can receive the medical attention and professional care their condition requires.

This distressing event has sparked widespread sympathy and outrage within the local community, highlighting the desperate lengths some families are driven to, as well as the extraordinary resilience of a four-year-old girl who refused to leave her brother’s side in the dark.
