Four Children Die With Measles Symptoms

Four more children have died after developing symptoms consistent with measles in Bangladesh over the past 24 hours, according to the latest situation report released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). During the same period, a total of 773 children were recorded as either confirmed measles cases or suspected cases displaying measles-like symptoms, highlighting the continued pressure on the country’s healthcare system.

The updated measles surveillance report, published on Saturday (18 July), stated that while four children died after exhibiting symptoms associated with the disease, none of the deaths recorded during the past 24 hours were laboratory-confirmed cases of measles. Health authorities distinguish between confirmed infections and suspected cases based on clinical assessments and laboratory testing, with many patients initially classified according to their symptoms while confirmation is pending.

The cumulative figures since 15 March paint a far more concerning picture. According to the DGHS, 689 children have died after developing symptoms suggestive of measles during this period. In addition, 95 children whose infections were laboratory-confirmed have also lost their lives. Taken together, measles and measles-related suspected cases have claimed the lives of 784 children nationwide since mid-March.

The latest daily update also recorded 74 newly confirmed measles infections. Alongside these cases, another 699 children were identified as having symptoms consistent with the disease, bringing the combined number of new confirmed and suspected patients over the past 24 hours to 773.

Hospitals continue to receive a significant number of patients. During the reporting period, 649 children were newly admitted for treatment, while 498 patients recovered sufficiently to be discharged from hospital. The figures indicate that healthcare facilities remain under sustained demand as they continue to manage both confirmed and suspected measles cases.

Official surveillance data show that, from 15 March to the present, Bangladesh has recorded a total of 116,710 suspected measles cases. Of these, 14,318 have been confirmed through testing. Over the same period, 99,249 patients required hospitalisation, while 95,529 have since been discharged after receiving treatment.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that primarily affects children and can lead to severe complications, particularly among those with weakened immunity or inadequate vaccination coverage. Public health authorities continue to monitor the outbreak through routine surveillance, while hospitals across the country remain engaged in treating affected children and managing suspected infections as laboratory investigations continue.
