Police in Kaliganj, Gazipur, have arrested three men in connection with the gang rape and forced abortion of a 12-year-old girl. The victim, a fourth-grade pupil at a local primary school, is currently undergoing treatment at a tertiary hospital after suffering severe medical complications from the ordeal.
According to police sources and the formal complaint filed by the victim’s mother, the abuse began approximately five months ago. The primary suspect, identified as Ahad, lured the child to his residence in the Moktarpur area through coercion and intimidation before sexually assaulting her. Taking advantage of periods when the girl’s family members were absent, three other neighbours—Shamim, Nazrul Islam, and Safiqul—subsequently subjected her to repeated sexual abuse over several months, using threats of violence to enforce her silence.
The systematic abuse came to light after the young girl became pregnant as a consequence of the assaults. Upon discovering the pregnancy, Ahad administered illicit medications to the child in an effort to forcibly terminate the pregnancy. In the early hours of 21 October, the forced procedure resulted in a traumatic miscarriage, leaving the child in a critical medical condition.
Alarmed by her sudden deterioration, family members rushed the victim to the Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex. Observing the severity of her physical state and the nature of the complications, attending physicians administered preliminary care before immediately transferring her to the Shahid Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur for specialized medical treatment and monitoring.
Following a formal criminal complaint lodged by the victim’s mother, law enforcement officers conducted targeted operations across the region. Authorities successfully apprehended three of the named suspects: Ahad (son of Kamal Sheikh), Shamim (son of the late Islam), and Nazrul Islam (son of the late Ansar Ali). The fourth suspect, Safiqul (son of the late Ansur Ali), remains at large.
Confirming the law enforcement action, Officer-in-Charge of Kaliganj Police Station, Md Zakir Hossain, stated that a formal case had been registered under the relevant statutory provisions regarding violence against women and children. He confirmed the arrest of the three principal suspects and assured that police drives are actively under way to track down and detain the remaining fugitive.
