Former Australian cricketing legend Damien Martin has been hospitalised in a critical condition and is currently in an induced coma, following a severe illness reportedly diagnosed as meningitis. The 54-year-old former stroke-maker fell ill during the Boxing Day period last week, with his condition deteriorating while at home, prompting immediate hospital admission.
Australian media reports indicate that Martin is receiving intensive care for meningitis, an inflammation of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Meningitis can be life-threatening if not treated promptly, highlighting the seriousness of his condition.
Close friends and former colleagues have expressed their support and concern. Adam Gilchrist, former Australian captain and one of Martin’s closest friends, told The Australian, “He is receiving the best possible care. Amanda and the family know that so many people are keeping them in their thoughts and prayers.”
Former Australia coach Darren Lehmann also sent words of encouragement on social media, stating, “Sending love and prayers… Stay strong, keep fighting, legend. Love to the family.”
Damien Martin was widely regarded as one of Australia’s finest stroke-makers, a key player in Steve Waugh’s formidable team. Across his illustrious career, Martin played 67 Test matches and 208 One Day Internationals (ODIs), scoring 13 Test centuries and maintaining a Test batting average of 46.37. He was also a member of Australia’s victorious 2003 World Cup squad, where he played a crucial role in the final against India, remaining unbeaten on 88 and forging a match-winning partnership with Ricky Ponting.
After retiring from international cricket during the 2006 Ashes series, Martin briefly worked as a commentator before largely stepping away from the public eye. His career and sportsmanship continue to inspire cricket enthusiasts worldwide.
