The Government of Bangladesh announced on Thursday that Additional Attorney General Mohammad Arshadur Rauf has been entrusted with the additional responsibilities of the Attorney General. According to an official statement issued by the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, this decision was made with the approval of the President to ensure uninterrupted functioning of the country’s legal and judicial machinery. The appointment is effective immediately.
This move follows the resignation of the 17th Attorney General, Mohammad Asaduzzaman, who submitted his resignation to the President on 27 December, citing personal reasons. Sources indicate that Mr Asaduzzaman had filed his nomination for the 13th National Parliamentary elections from the Jhenaidah-1 (Shailkupa) constituency on 5 November 2024. He had assumed the office of Attorney General on 8 August 2024, a period regarded as critical due to prevailing political and legal challenges.
To temporarily fill this vacancy and maintain continuity in the country’s legal affairs, Mohammad Arshadur Rauf has been given the additional charge of Attorney General. His prior experience as Additional Attorney General is expected to facilitate effective coordination between the government and the judiciary during this transitional period.
Earlier, on 13 August 2024, Mr Rauf, along with two other distinguished lawyers, had been appointed as Additional Attorneys General. Details of these appointments are outlined in the table below:
| Name | Designation | Appointment Date | Tenure | Remarks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mohammad Arshadur Rauf | Additional Attorney General | 13 August 2024 | Until further notice | Currently holding additional charge of AG |
| Mohammad Abdul Jabbar Bhuiya | Additional Attorney General | 13 August 2024 | Until further notice | Performing regular duties |
| Mohammad Anik Rushd Haque | Additional Attorney General | 13 August 2024 | Until further notice | Performing regular duties |
Legal experts have emphasised that this appointment is crucial for maintaining judicial stability in Bangladesh. As the chief legal officer of the government, the Attorney General plays a pivotal role in coordinating between the government and the courts. Mr Rauf’s additional responsibility ensures that high-profile cases and critical government documentation proceed without disruption.
During his tenure in this capacity, he will oversee key legal matters, work closely with the judiciary, and ensure that the government’s legal policies and decisions are implemented consistently. Analysts note that this step is likely to strengthen public confidence in the government and fortify the nation’s legal framework.
Observers view the appointment as a significant measure reflecting the government’s commitment to stability, integrity, and the effective administration of justice in Bangladesh.
