A Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) member tragically lost his life after apparently shooting himself at a border outpost in Kurigram’s Phulbari Upazila. The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, around 1:30 am.
The deceased has been identified as Sepoy Md. Nasim Uddin, aged 23, holding BGB service number 114604. He was the son of Babul Mondal from Khajura village in Sadar Upazila, Jhenaidah district. At the time of the incident, Sepoy Nasim was stationed at the Gangarhat Border Outpost under the Lalmonirhat-15 BGB Battalion.
According to police sources, Sepoy Nasim donned his uniform and took his rifle with the intention of conducting a routine border patrol. At some point, within the eastern boundary of the camp barracks, he reportedly shot himself in the chest. The gunfire alerted his colleagues, who rushed to the scene and found him lying in a pool of blood. He was initially moved to the barracks veranda before being rushed to Phulbari Upazila Health Complex. Doctors on duty declared him dead upon arrival.
The local police were notified, and the body was recovered by Phulbari Police Station the following morning, Friday, 2 January, at approximately 10:30 am. It was subsequently sent to Kurigram Morgue for post-mortem examination.
Phulbari Police Officer-in-Charge, Mahmud Hasan Naeem, confirmed the incident and stated that an unnatural death case had been filed. “The body has been sent for autopsy, and no complaints have been received from any party. Investigations are ongoing,” he said.
Lieutenant Colonel Mehedi Imam, commanding officer of the Lalmonirhat BGB Battalion, remarked that preliminary evidence suggests the case is a suicide. “The soldier had shown signs of mental instability. A detailed inquiry is currently underway,” he added.
